Not to be outdone by Warner Bros.' recent run of exciting superhero-movie news — Superman has a director, Tom Hardy might be in "Batman 3" — Sony has unveiled the identity of the villain in their upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot: Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. the Lizard!

According to TheWrap.com, the surgeon-turned-baddie will be played by Rhys Ifans (who was reportedly offered the role earlier this week).

Once Ifans' name was thrown into the mix, the Internet lit up with speculation as to what villain might appear in Marc Webb's new film. Venom, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3," was the most popular assumption, but according to two unnamed sources credited by the Wrap, that character will not be featured in the movie.

So who is the Lizard? In the comics, Curtis Connors is a gifted surgeon who loses his arm when he goes to serve in the war to help injured GIs. He becomes obsessed with reptilian regeneration as a potential cure for his amputated arm and develops a serum that, at first, does indeed re-grow his lost appendage. But soon after — in typical comic book fashion — it turns its creator into a monster.

Naturally, no plot details have been revealed about the new "Spider-Man," only castmembers Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and now Ifans as the Lizard.

"Spider-Man" is set to begin production in December and will hit theaters in 3-D on July 3, 2012.
