Emma Watson achieved overnight star status at the age of eleven, thanks to her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter films. Now 20 years old and finishing the last film, Watson admits that she almost walked away from Harry Potter entirely. It's hard to believe she nearly let the role of Hermione go, but Watson had a good reason: she wanted to go to college. Watch her explanation below.
"I had a real fight on my hands to ensure that I was able to go to university," Watson told MTV News on Tuesday, "because the schedule they handed me didn't really allow for any of that, and I wasn't prepared to let it go."
The young actress seriously considered letting her contract lapse in 2007, before shooting began on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (#6 in the series, released in 2009). Fortunately, her commitment to higher education persuaded the higher-ups at Warner Brothers to rearrange Watson's schedule.
"They essentially moved the 'Harry Potter' film schedule around my exam dates, which was amazing," the actress says. "I'm very grateful."
We're super-impressed that Emma Watson had the integrity to choose her own future over money and fame -- though of course, she ended up having both! The Harry Potter star is now in her second year at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. At the moment she's promoting the second-to-last Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, which hits theaters on Friday.
